Two for two as 2 Seas Motorsport claims double win and podium at Snetterton
A bumper weekend at Snetterton saw 2 Seas Motorsport score a pair of lights-to-flag victories, and a further podium, to maintain the championship charge heading into the final stages of the season. An opening 1-2 result of the weekend, led by championship leaders Kiern Jewiss and Charles Dawson, was further enhanced as the Contempo Concept entry of Kevin Tse and Maximillian Götz took to the top step in the second race. The results see Kiern and Charles maintain the championship lead, with two rounds remaining.
After the international round of the season, the championship was back on British soil for the second sprint double header. Snetterton would play host to two one-hour sprint races, with both sides of the 2 Seas Motorsport garage looking to bounce back and return to winning ways. With overtaking a real challenge around the tight Snetterton circuit, and races only being an hour long, the team looked to optimize the qualifying run. The two sessions were used to set the individual grids for Sunday’s race events. Kevin looked immediately quick, setting an initial benchmark for the session, before a late charge by teammate Charles Dawson would secure a last gasp pole position. The second session would see honours switched, as Maximillian topped the timesheets.
The first race action saw Charles maintain the lead away from the start, while Kevin battled hard over the opening laps for the podium positions. Running in clear air, the #42 led until the pitstop window approached. Charles ran one extra lap, while Kevin pitted at the first opportunity. Quick work by the 2 Seas crew gained track position, and as Charles made way for Kiern a lap later, the two Mercedes-AMG GT3s were then running in close formation at the front of the field. A strategic decision by the team had Kiern running on new tyres to help maintain and extend his lead, while Maximillian battled hard to maintain the second place on the podium. At the end of the hour, Kiern took race victory to secure the team’s first 1-2 finish of the season.
Leading away from the front and, again, using tyre strategy to help protect the advantage, Maximillian was able to hold position and build a gap to the chasing pack. A messy start further back put Kiern in the middle of the battle pack during the opening laps, fighting for positions until the pitlane opened at middle distance. Kiern brought the #42 in for a switch to Charles, dropping slightly down the order during the stop having to serve the pitstop compensation time from the earlier race win, along with a penalty from a race start infringement. Maximillian continued to push on further into the race, setting the fastest lap, before and eventually handing over to Kevin, who retained the lead as he rejoined the circuit despite also serving a longer stop due to the earlier result. After initially defending the position on his first few laps, Kevin then settled into a rhythm, rebuilding the lead. Charles made steady progress across the closing laps, and would eventually bring the #42 home in P7, while Kevin crossed the line to take a second victory of the season.
“Our opening race result was needed, and the whole team executed everything perfectly and threw everything at it. Qualifying was going to be critical, and we were aware how important pole position is at Snetterton, given the nature of the circuit, so it was fantastic to secure that and convert that to the race win. Our race 2 was disappointing to be honest, costing us critical points which, at this point in the season, is so important. However, there are lots of positives to take away from the weekend, and we take the lead to Brands Hatch without any success penalty.”
Charles Dawson, 2 Seas Motorsport driver, #42 Mercedes-AMG GT3.
“A big thank you to the team for a great weekend, overall. P1 and P2 for us, and great points for the championship. Last year we scored a win here, and we have had another great weekend, so Snetterton is fast becoming my favourite track! The team did a great job and the car was awesome all weekend, quick from the first lap off the back of good preparation and testing coming into the weekend.
For the races, qualifying was key, and Kevin did a great job in the first race to set us up for P2, which we didn’t necessarily expect. The second race was great fun, and I was able to really focus out in front and put in quali laps every lap, which built the lead ahead of the stop. Kevin then did a fantastic job to bring it home to round off a fantastic weekend. We are now firmly back in the game in terms of the championship, closing the gap to our teammates."
Maximillian Götz, 2 Seas Motorsport driver, #18 Contempo Concept Mercedes-AMG GT3.
“Another faultless job by the whole team across the weekend. Great preparation, no mistakes, and full focus on delivering exactly what was needed, and both sides of the garage showed they had the pace and determination to be at the front. Tyre strategy was also a key factor, with the crews opting to throw everything at protecting track position with carefully considered tyre choice for Kiern and Maximillian. Charles and Kiern maintain their championship lead after their lights to flag result from race 1, but Kevin and Maximillian are keeping them on their toes with a textbook weekend. I am really looking forward to Brands Hatch, and we will be pushing to keep this momentum rolling.”
