Barcelona podium as 2 Seas returns to International GT Open
It was a successful return to the International GT Open grid for 2 Seas Motorsport at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as Charles Dawson and GT3 rookie McKenzy Cresswell scored a Pro-Am class podium finish in the weekend’s second race. The race weekend saw Charles continue his run of form this season with the team, while McKenzy took the transition to GT3 machinery in his stride, delivering a particularly impressive qualifying effort for the second race in tricky conditions.
2 Seas Motorsport made a return to the International GT Open grid for the first time since 2021, with season regular Charles Dawson looking to gain further GT3 experience. This season had already seen him score multiple wins to lead the British GT championship, along with a victory earlier this month in GT World Challenge Europe. His teammate for this latest challenge was GT3 debutant, McKenzy Cresswell, having scored the GT4 Winter Series title earlier this season.
Saturday’s efforts saw Charles put the #222 Mercedes-AMG inside the top five during qualifying. He then managed to avoid the melee during the incident-filled start to the race, running cleanly until the pit window opened. A strategy call by the team made an early switch to McKenzy, while also avoiding a busy pitlane. The young Brit showed strong pace across his maiden GT3 stint, making gains on the field to move up the order and bring home a Pro-Am top five result.
Heavy rain on Sunday morning added a new challenge for McKenzy’s qualifying run. However, he quickly adapted to the conditions, immediately fighting at the front of the overall standings. Despite a red flag interruption, McKenzy delivered a strong result, ending the session inside the overall top five, P2 in class. The race start brought about more learnings, starting under the Safety Car, and McKenzy was forced to defend hard as the race got underway. After initially dropping back in the overall standings, the #222 started to make progress up the order, and the team opted for another roll of the strategy dice as the pitstop window opened.
In a reverse from the opening race, the driver change was delayed, instead choosing track position and running in clear air, climbing back up to the original class position. McKenzy brought his stint to a successful conclusion, handing over to Charles to close out the weekend. As the order shook itself out, Charles was immediately into a battle for the final podium position and, despite initially losing ground to a Pro entry, he took advantage of a situation which unfolded around him. With several cars involved, Charles made a decisive move to move back into the podium positions, then holding the position to the flag. The result continues his impressive 2025 campaign, and saw McKenzy secure silverware on his GT3 debut.
Focus now shifts to the final round of the 2025 British GT Championship at Donington Park, with 2 Seas Motorsport still in the fight for both the Driver and Team titles. The #DoningtonDecider takes place over the weekend of 4-5 October.
